For more than a decade beginning in 1998 an open mic talent showcase made the lobby of The Wine Country Inn the place to be on Thursday nights. Fess Parker himself always welcomed the assembled hotel and dinner guests then opened the show with a song or two, after which he would turn the microphone over to whoever in the audience was up to the challenge.
Quite often then valley residents, Cheryl Ladd, Ed Ames and Rona Barrett, would add star power to the gathering. The supremely talented Bill Powell accompanied all singers on the piano, adding polish to everyone's performance. Perennial headliner, Marcella Parker would close the show, invariably wowing everyone with her stellar renditions of Tenderly, Funny Valentine and other classic standards. These gatherings added a touch of old Hollywood glamour to valley life.
